Troubleshooting

Program won't install

Occasionally you may find that the setup.exe program won't run. Known symptoms are:

  • the CD whirrs but nothing further happens - possibly means a faulty CD.
  • a message appears about file "c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt". This is a known Microsoft issue - please contact NBI Technical Support for advice (address below).
  • If you're attempting to install in Windows 7 you may get an error message to the effect that the setup program isn't compatible.  If your disk has NO asterisk next to the wording "Disc 1" then you have a disk from an early batch of NBI's.  We can replace this for you free of charge, please contact NBI Technical Support for details at .
Network Initialisation Error

When starting the program you get the error message "Network Initialisation Error" followed by "File or directory does not exist. File C:\PDOXUSRS.NET."

You may see this error message especially if running under Windows Vista or Windows 7. Please see the Windows Vista / Win 7 page

"An error occurred while attempting to initialize the Borland Database engine (error $2109)"

Please contact NBI Technical Support (address below)

"Emulation" message after church picture

The program installs successfully from Disk 1. When you start the program you see the picture of a church, but you then you get a message window displayed with the text "CD/DVD emulation software has been detected. Please disable all CD/DVD emulation software and re-start the game". This message is not part of the main NBI program but is generated under certain circumstances by the copy-protection on Disk 1. If you get this message and can't proceed any further, please contact NBI Technical Support for advice.

Other messages at church picture

You may receive a message "Cannot locate the CD-Rom" (in the blue title bar), with text that repeatedly asks you to insert Disk 1 - though you already have. This may mean that your CD-drive can't verify that Disk 1 is genuine, even though it is. Please contact NBI Technical Support to see if your particular CD drive may be the problem. To determine the details of its make and model, please see below.

Program 'freezes' at church picture

This may be another symptom of the above, i.e. that your CD-drive can't verify that Disk 1 is genuine. Sometimes the program can be 'kicked' into action by (a) flicking the CD drive door out and back in again, or (b) starting up with the wrong disk in your CD drive. Again, please contact NBI Technical Support with the symptoms and CD drive details. To determine the details of its make and model, please see the final paragraph below.

"Cannot locate the CD-Rom"

You may receive a message "Cannot locate the CD-Rom" (in the blue title bar), with text that repeatedly asks you to insert Disk 1, even though you've already done so. This may mean that your CD-drive can't verify that Disk 1 is genuine, even though it probably is. Please contact NBI Technical Support to see if your particular CD drive may be the problem. To determine the details of its make and model, please see the final paragraph below.

The program keeps asking me to insert any NBI disk, even though I've already done so.

[1] If you have more than one CD drive, you may be using the wrong one. Try putting the NBI disk into the other drive. [2] If your computer hardware specification has changed, the program may be trying to access a drive which is no longer a CD drive. For instance, if you have recently added a new hard disk this will alter the CD drive assignment(s), so that drive D may have become drive E. To correct this, access "Tools > User Setup" from the Main Menu and re-select the CD-Rom drive letter.

I get an error message similar to one of the following:

"ERROR - There was a problem reading this CD-Rom disk"; "Error opening main database"; "Corrupt file – other than header"; "Error in index file"; "Access violation at address ...."; "Read address ..."; or "Runtime error 216"

These generally suggest a corrupt NBI disk. Please contact NBI Technical Support to arrange a replacement.

How do I find out details of my CD-Rom drive's make and model?

Go into "Control Panel" and select "System", then on the "Device Manager" tab window click the "+" next to the "CD-Rom" entry to display the relevant information.

If you can’t resolve the problem, you can contact NBI Technical Support as follows:

Errors in the Data Entries

Every care has been taken in making the transcriptions, but standards of handwriting in the original registers can vary enormously and errors may have escaped the attention of the checkers. If you do find what appears to be an error, we encourage you to report it to the relevant transcribers (see "Contacting Participants" on the NBI Main Page). That way you can help to ensure that the next edition of the NBI will be even better.
