Unearthing past lives
The November 2016 issue of Family Tree magazine, includes an article on a project FFHS sponsored at Gloucestershire Archives. A small team at the archives catalogued around 1000 manuscripts from a firm of solicitors based in the Forest of Dean. Altogether, around 3000 names are mentioned in the collection which spans 1572 to 1923. The FFHS worked in partnership with Gloucestershire Archives and the Gloucestershire Family History Society. The work was undertaken by a small team of volunteers, under the leadership of a project archivist.
If you are interested in getting involved in a similar project, why not contact your local family history society? They often co-ordinate projects that need volunteers to collect names, and transcribe and index records, such as memorial inscriptions, parish registers and other documents. See our A-Z list of family history societies for contact details.
