200,000 Free Books

FamilySearch is renowned for offering the largest free collection of family history records in the World. These include a multitude of indexes and images of documents, along with opportunities for everyone to share their discoveries in its treasure trove of family trees.

Less well known is its Family History Books section, which features more than 200,000 digitised genealogy and family history publications. The collection includes family and local histories, journals, pedigrees and transcripts of original documents such as wills and parish registers. They have been scanned from items held by a range of major libraries.

To find items of interest, you can either:

  • perform a simple search (if you know the name of the author or book title) or
  • an advanced search (to discover all material that relates to a particular topic).

In many cases, scanned images of entire books are available to read or download. However, in some cases access is restricted to those viewing in particular libraries or family history centres.

FamilySearch is just one of the 40 websites that you can read about in our "Free Websites" pages.
