Essex Record Office on HistoryPin

The HistoryPin website gives organisations and individuals the opportunity to make pictures, videos or sound clips available to the world at large by virtually ‘pinning’ them to a map of the world.

For instance, Essex Record Office has started to share some of its treasures in this way, some of its first "pins" being scenes of Chelmsford taken by the Spalding family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Other contributions include recordings from the Essex Sound and Video Archive which demonstrate what the county sounded like in the past. You can find out more about how material is arranged by exploring Essex's own channel.

The growing band of members of this online community includes some 65,000 users and nearly 2,500 institutions, drawn from across the world. Over 250,000 materials and memories are already pinned to the site.

Whichever places you are interested in, there is a good chance that HistoryPin will provide pictures and other resources of interest. You might even be inspired to enrol as a contributor and launch your own specialist project.
