Free Scans of Book Pages

Digital versions of vast numbers of books can be read and/or downloaded from the internet free of charge. Some useful sites for this are:

However, downloading a whole book is not allowed if the publication is still subject to copyright. Google Books contains many “snippet views” of pages from such books, but often does not let you see the whole page, let alone the entire book. So, you will miss the full story if you find an interesting reference, for instance to an ancestor, but only a snippet view is available.

Fortunately, there is now a way to overcome this problem.

FamilySearch offer a free lookup service for genealogy books and microfilm that are included in their vast collection. If you apply online, they will scan an entire page and email it to you for free. The procedure is clearly explained at the FamilySearch blog.
