Free Treasure Trove at British History Online

British History Online is a vast treasury that you can mine when exploring your family’s story and its wider context. The site’s contents include primary and secondary sources such as:

  • the Victoria County History – details of the history of a large number of parishes in England
  • the Survey of London – an enormous collection of information about the London area
  • 19th century Ordnance Survey maps
  • journals of the House of Lords and House of Commons
  • calendars of state papers, letters and diaries.

The flexible search facility allows you to scan the whole site or focus on particular localities or topics.

British History Online is run by the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. Its mission is to provide highly accurate digital versions of the core works of British history.

You can access most of the information on the site free of charge. A premium section is also available to subscribers.
