Update on new Caird Library, Sammy Ofer Wing, National Maritime Museum

The following is taken from the NMM website; more information can be seen at www.nmm.ac.uk/researchers/library/update-on-new-caird-library

Reading room opens to schedule but delay to full library service

Following the very successful opening of the Sammy Ofer Wing to the public, the new Caird Library is open and welcoming visitors. The Library currently is able to provide readers with access to printed items in the reading room including 6,000 key modern books, reference resources such as Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, current journals and electronic resources. Readers can also use the new reprographic equipment and the public Wi-Fi service. Visitors can register to use the Library at www.nmm.ac.uk/aeon.

Although the new onsite archive stores were completed on time, it has proved difficult to get the balance of temperature and humidity absolutely right. This is not unusual, however it is essential that such conditions are established and maintained for the care and preservation of the Museum’s archive collections.

Due to these difficulties there is currently a delay with the move of the archive collections back onsite. We are working with our architect Purcell Miller Tritton, services engineer Fulcrum Mott MacDonald and contractor Lend Lease to conclude the commission and testing period. We will confirm on our website as soon as practically possible the date on which full library services, including archive retrieval and usage, will be available.
