The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa has focussed on a series of Home Children projects; these meet the Society's aims and objectives, encompassing all of the British Isles and memorialising the history and lives of some 100,000 British children settled in Canada, 1869 to 1948, by child emigration societies. Volunteers have so far prepared, from Library and Archives Canada (LAC) records, the Home Child Database (passenger lists) and the Middlemore Children Index. Future plans include indexing all home children records held by LAC for eventual inclusion in freely searchable on-line databases. find out more about the Society >
NBI3 is available on a
single CD and contains over 18 Million burial records. A major new exhibition opens at the V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum, London) 20th March – 4th July 2010. It is the first time that the V&A will present an exhibition of British quilts with examples dating from 1700 to the present day. Examples from the V&A’s own collection will be on display along with key national loans including the Rajah Quilt on loan from the National Gallery of Australia. The Rajah Quilt was made by women convicts aboard HMS Rajah, 1841 as they were being transported to Van Diemen’s Land (present day Tasmania). The Tasmania FHS holds the convict records and inward shipping records and will undertake research for a fee. Did you attend the Glamorgan FHS Open Day at Cardiff City Hall on 3rd October 2009?
If so, perhaps you can help. Were you there when a gentleman collapsed? In the ensuing confusion, a carrier bag belonging to the gentleman which contained an old family bible and a small book on the Earls of Dilston & Derwentwater went missing.
Despite extensive enquiries the two books have not been found and are of great sentimental value to their owner. If you can help in any way or have any information please contact The Administrator admin@ffhs.org.uk
It is almost certain that one or more of your ancestors served their country at some point in the past. This link will take you to a short piece that looks at medals and how we can use them to help find out more about our ancestors. British, Imperial & Commonwealth Medals are basically split into three categories: · Gallantry Medals · Campaign Medals · Miscellaneous awards and long service medals
Sources for indexes to many of medals are given in the article Are you a mum aged 20 - 42, with at least one child age 4 or under? Do you have a much loved family heirloom that has been passed down the generations to you, and that your child will now use, or has used? Perhaps a teddy, doll, game, book, child's furniture, christening gown, rocking horse or teething ring. If so, Rachel Garnett a free lance journalist is gathering information for an article and would love to hear from you. Please contact Rachel direct with details of what your heirloom is, how old you and your child/children are, plus a photo. If you have any old photos of a previous generation with the heirloom even better. Email Rachel at rmgfreelance@hotmail.com.
The Federation organises

All At Sea! An army of keen volunteers in 2008/9 indexed sections of the 1851 census using the excellent transcription tool provided by Findmypast.co.uk which proved to be an enjoyable and interesting project for those who took part. All we need is a large number of volunteers, not only in the UK but also abroad, who can work at home using their own computers and have broadband connection to produce a fully transcribed index to Births, Marriages and Deaths at Sea 1854 – 1888. Using Picture postcards to illustrate your family history Postcards were used from about 1870 onwards and picture postcards with views of streets and rural scenes became popular towards the end of the 19th century and were used on a very large scale during the first years of the 20th century.’ (The Oxford Companion to Family and Local History Edited by David Hey) Why not consider sourcing postcards to illustrate your family history, the church where an ancestor was married, views of the place where they lived, maybe their place of work or a ship they sailed on, you might be surprised what you can find. York International Postcard Expo takes place on April 9th & 10th at the York Racecourse Grandstand with 80+ dealers.
