Society Spotlight

Cardiganshire
Family History Society

Were Your Ancestors Cardis?

If your ancestors used this diminutive form of the county’s name then they most certainly originated from the county of Cardiganshire / Sir Aberteifi on the west coast of Wales.
Cardiganshire Family History Society was formed in 1995 to encourage the study of genealogy and family history in Cardiganshire by those having family connections with the county wherever they may live. The Society also welcomes those living within the county who have no Cardiganshire ancestry but are interested in family history generally. Our journal is published three times a year in which reports of meetings are published and members’ interests listed.

The Society holds regular monthly meetings between September and June in St David’s Church Hall, Bath Street, Aberystwyth with its AGM being held in March.

Project work, such as transcribing Parish Registers and Monumental Inscriptions is undertaken by the Society throughout the year and these works are published in print and microfiche form. The Society has a rapidly expanding library of books and booklets relating to research throughout the UK – all of which is available for consultation at the Ceredigion Archive, Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth. The Society is able to offer a limited search service to members only through the services of an experienced voluntary Search Officer.

Free Access to 1911 Census Has Proved too Popular!

The free access provided at the seven hubs around England and Wales was provided as a set number of credits for use on the 1911 Census website. The huge popularity of the scheme at both Tyne and Wear Archives and Museum, and Manchester Archives and Local Studies and Greater Manchester County Record Office, has meant that the credits supplied to these two areas have run out earlier than anticipated. Based on the onsite usage of the website at The National Archives (TNA) in Kew, it was estimated that the credits supplied would last for around a year. These sites ceased to have free access to the 1911 Census from 1 October 2009.

The Science Museum in London is appealing for anyone who believes they may be related to one of the British soldiers killed at Fromelles to contact them. In 2010 the museum will use the Fromelles dig as part of a wider exhibition entitled ‘Who Am I?’

The Imperial War Museum in London will also launch an exhibition in 2010 which will tell the story of the battle as well as explaining how the soldiers’ graves were discovered and excavated and how the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is constructing its first new war cemetery for almost fifty years.

School Log Book Project Launched by FACHRS

The Family & Community Historical Research Society (FACHRS) has launched a new national research project on Education using School Log Books.

A school log book was the headmaster’s record of daily activities within the school and logs were obliged to be kept from 1862. Headmasters often wrote the entries in  a log book as they would a personal diary. This research project continues the FACHRS tradition of undertaking academic research outside the walls of the University whereby society members, other academic researchers, family and local historians are encouraged to take part in the project.
