Welcome to the
February edition of
the FFHS
Ezine

supported by
WDYTYA - Live

I graduated from Reading University with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. And then went on to work as a freelance Systems Engineer in the Defence and Aerospace Industries, with  my last job being on the landing gear systems for the two major new aircraft of the 21st Century; the A380 and Boeing 787.

I have been researching my own Family History for many years, from the days of fiche and film readers with my family interests being in the West Country, Isle of Wight, Hampshire and Kent.
As
Vice Chairman of Somerset and Dorset FHS I have run a number of successful Computer Days for the Society over the years, and have also been involved with the census transcriptions, notably in formatting and producing the books for publication and organising the 1851 census transcriptions for Findmypast.

I would like to see closer co-operation and communication between individual Family History Societies and see my role on both the Publicity and Communications Sub-committees of the Federation of Family History Societies as one way of helping to achieve this.
I believe the exchange of ideas via forums, seminars and meetings organised by the FFHS can only be of benefit to all Family History Societies both now and in the future.

   The British Postal Museum
   War Memorials Database Launched

The British Postal Museum and Archive and Royal Mail have launched the war memorials database available via the BPMA website. The project, funded by Royal Mail and managed by the BPMA has helped to bring the UK National Inventory of War Memorials survey up to date. Until now the national survey, which was established in 1989, has not had complete data from Royal Mail sites.

The project was started because whilst it was known that many memorials existed in Royal Mail buildings, an exact figure was not known and the Royal Mail recognised its duty of care for the memorials and wanted to ensure that they were safe guarded in the future. A small, discreet sign has been fixed near to each memorial giving instructions as to action required if the memorial needed to be moved in the event of closure or relocation of a building.

  Tunnels Beneath Holborn

100ft beneath Holborn there exists a network of tunnels with a fascinating history. Originally built as air raid shelters to provide shelter for up to 8,000 Londoners during the Blitz in 1942, in 1944 they were used as storage by MI6 and in 1945 the then Public Records Office used them to store 400 tons of highly sensitive documents.

During the 1990’s over 150 telephone engineers worked there and had at their disposal amenities such as a snooker hall, canteen and bar. The complex became surplus to BT’s requirements and at the end of last year was offered for sale.
