Greetings from Cornwall. I have recently been appointed as the new chairman of the FFHS. This is a post I have taken up because I had a number of things to say about the Federation and felt they needed action. Rather than agitate from the sidelines I have ‘Nailed my colours to the mast’ and now find myself at the helm looking at those colours. I hope that in my time as Chairman, I can make some changes within the Federation that will be of benefit to our member societies and more importantly to family historians and genealogist across the UK and further a-field. There is a lot to do and I cannot do it all at once BUT the two main areas I will be dealing with first are:
I made a statement of intent at the FFHS General Meeting in Plymouth on 29 March and this can be found on the FFHS website. I hope that you will take the time to look at it and see what I hope is an achievable vision of the 21st century Federation. Best wishes and good luck in hunting for your ancestors David Holman, Chairman Top of page

Although general knowledge is important, the producers do love a fun team full of spirit and personality. The only other requirements are that the contestants are UK residents and over 18 years of age.

From 1st April 2008, General Register Office (GRO) became part of the Identity and Passport Service (IPS).
The
GRO oversees registration services to members of the general public
and its remit extends over a range of aspects relating to civil
marriage preparation, celebration and registration and the
registration of births, deaths, stillbirths and adoptions. The UK Census offices (ONS, GROS, and NISRA) invite you to participate in a 2011 Census output consultation through response to an online survey.
The consultation is open from 25
February 2008 for 12 weeks. It aims to find out what users of the
2011 Census want from the data that will be gathered. Your answers
will help to prioritise user needs. More information about the 2011 Census is available from the websites of the three UK Census offices:
A celebratory event was held at The National Archives on 20 March 2008 to mark the successful completion of Archives 4 All, the 4th and final phase of Access to Archives (A2A). Access to Archives (A2A) began in 2000 and since then has provided repositories across England and Wales with a unique opportunity to present material on a single database via the Internet.
Archives 4 All
began in September 2005 and was completed on 31 March 2008.
There are 19 Archives 4 All
projects covering a diverse range of topics. No further programme for
the addition of new material to the A2A site is planned. The website
itself will continue as a resource and current projects will have the
facility to update existing content.

If you are
interested in advertising in our FFHS TRACELINE SERVICE DISCONTINUED ''Traceline' (missing persons tracing service) which for some years has been prominent on the GRO, homepage has been withdrawn from public use without notice with effect from 1st April. This follows the transfer of the service from ONS to the Information Centre for Health and Social Care. After this move it was deemed inappropriate to continue offering this service
Do you get annoyed with errors in
the online censuses? Much of these censuses, other than the 1881
census, have been transcribed overseas and despite what must be
experienced staff there are inevitable differences. I know many
of us have found that alternative transcriptions of the census
have a value in their own right as where one index has
difficulties another index gets it right. You now have a chance
to help in transcribing the 1851 census and helping the family
history society that covers that area. Complete the online survey on our website by the 31st May 2008 and you will be automatically entered in our free prize draw for a Fujitsu Siemens laptop computer, (computer specifications) generously donated by GENfair the ‘one stop shop’ for local and family historians.
